  3. FTP or file transfer protocol is an Internet standard that allows you to
  4. log in or connect to a remote computer, view the contents of this computer
  5. and exchange files between this computer and your PC.

  7. An FTP site is a computer that contains files that are available for FTP
  8. transfer.  These sites contain a many different file types including video, audio, graphics,
  9. and text files. Most files are available at no cost. However some are
  10. shareware.

  12. Before you can use or view and FTP file, you must first download these
  13. files to your PC.  If the files are compressed you must decompress a them
  14. before you can use them.

  16. Certain FTP sites limit access to people who have accounts on the
  17. FTP server  However, most FTP sites allow for anonymous FTP. This allows for
  18. anyone to transfer files from the FTP site to their own computer.

  22. Why FTP?
  23. <p>Before the World Wide Web standardized Internet access, there were many
  24. other ways to get to computers to download files. FTP was one of these means.
  25. Since the World Wide Web has now become the primary means for accessing data
  26. on the Internet FTP is no longer necessary.  However, the Internet still
  27. contains many FTP sites. In short FTP is here to stay.

  29. To use FTP you must have software that supports it.  First, check your
  30. Web browser. Both Netscape Navigator, and Microsoft Internet Explorer, support FTP. You can
  31. also buy a separate FTP software package, or download it from the
  32. World Wide Web.

  36. Be careful. Many FTP file conatain viruses.  With computers, a virus
  37. is a destructive program that attaches itself to files. When you run an
  38. "infected" program the viruss will affect the performance of your
  39. PC, and possibly destroy data on your PC's hard or floppy drive.
  40. Your best protection is to purchase an antivirus program which finds and
  41. removes infected programs.

  43. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  So if you
  44. plan to do a lot of downloading, invest in an antivirus program.
